Baby acne, also known as acne neonatorum, is a condition in which small red lesions form on an infant’s face after postpartum. Around 20 percent of newborns have this acne formation. Unsurprisingly, many parents are alarmed over this condition but there is nothing to worry about as the condition is not harmful to the baby. It tends to appear mostly on a newborns’ face during their third week or, within their first month after birth. It can, in certain cases, occur later or earlier. Treating acne neonatorum is a little different from the methods of how to get rid of acne in adults and adolescents.

Normally, baby acne looks like a red, rough rash. It is most common on the nose and cheeks of the infant, although it can appear on the back and anywhere on the face. Papules and comedones are sometimes present as well as some small pustules. Some experts suggest that the causes of baby acne are very similar to with those that cause acne in adolescents, whilst others suggest that delayed bathing and dirty blankets are the main cause. However, the most frequent cause of acne neonatorum is the transfer of excessive hormones from mother to the newborn during pregnancy and through breastfeeding.

A special baby acne treatment is not usually required as the acne will naturally heal within a few weeks but you can take measures to help relieve this problem. It goes without saying that you should keep your baby clean as much as possible which will prevent exacerbating the condition. Use only mild soaps when cleaning or bathing your baby and always use plain water. Avoid using lotions and oils as these can make the condition worse. Infants have delicate skin so remove anything that can irritate and damage their skin.

Parents usually use cream, lotions and other skin care products to cure pimples, pustules and papules from which their newborns are suffering. Although some of these skin care products are able to relieve the symptoms of your child’s acne, at times they can be unsafe for sensitive and delicate skin, which of course includes your little one. If you think your infant’s baby acne is extreme, consult your pediatrician for further advice on how to get rid of acne or what baby acne treatment should be followed. Usual baby acne treatment includes the application of retinoids and benzoyl peroxide topical creams.

Baby acne treatment with topical medications is only for severe cases. They should only be used if there is a compelling basis to do so, or only if your doctor suggests doing so. However, you should always remember that acne medications are not always good to the skin especially on skin as delicate as that of your infant.

Simply ensuring that your baby is always clean, as well as always having clean blankets, fabrics, clothing and beddings will go a long way towards making your baby more comfortable. Freeing your baby from any irritants that may bother him or her is a good move, but don’t confuse irritants with the child’s father…they are different!.

Don’t worry, almost all cases of baby acne are resolved without treatment within a few short weeks so stop fretting and enjoy your bundle of joy.
